Kapil Sharma Has Left Rehab Early, Quit Drinking, Says ‘Close Friend’

NEW DELHI:Kapil Sharma has reportedly stopped drinking and left the rehab some 28 days ahead of schedule, where he was recovering from alcoholism, DNA reported a “close friend” of the comedian as saying. The report added that Kapil left the Ayurvedic clinic in Bengaluru to touch down in Mumbai on Sunday because of pending work commitments. Kapil had revealed earlier that he was to undergo a 40-day treatment for detoxification – he had resorted to heavy drinking after his fight with former co-star Sunil Grover. But Kapil is sober now, revealed the friend, as reported by DNA. “…finally God planned this break for him. And it has done him a world of good. Kapil has stopped drinking completely, at least, for now,” DNA quoted the source as saying.

About Kapil leaving the rehab early, the source said it was necessary for Kapil’s new film Firangi, which is scheduled to release in November: “He needed to return to Mumbai to complete his film Firangi and start promoting and marketing it for its November release.”

Earlier this month, reports of Kapil Sharma’s improved health were followed by speculation that The Kapil Sharma Show will be back on track sometime next month. But it appears, The Kapil Sharma Show isn’t returning anytime soon, or at least till Kapil has fully recovered. “The show will return only when Kapil has fully recovered. Kapil has realised health is the most important thing in life. As for the show, it is very dear to him and it isn’t going anywhere,” said the source. Sony Entertainment Television has stopped airing fresh episodes of Kapil’s show after the show host went on a break.

Kapil Sharma addressed rumours of his deteriorating emotional and physical condition earlier this month, telling Bollywood Hungama: “Main thoda phisal gaya tha. Abb sambhal gaya hoon (I slipped now I’ve regained composure)”. This was followed by a confession, which was a first from Kapil: “I started drinking heavily. It was so unnecessary and so painful.”

Kapil Sharma, who was reputed both for his onscreen persona and his show, began losing popularity after his mid-air altercation with Sunil Grover. Kapil was allegedly inebriated during a flight back from Melbourne and assaulted and abused Sunil on board. The Kapil Sharma Show regulars Ali Asgar, Chandan Prabhakar and Sugandha Mishra had quit the show in support of Sunil Grover.

Sunil Grover is reportedly all set to return with a new show in October. It is speculated that with Kapil’s show having gone off air, Kiku Sharda (who had continued his tryst with Kapil) will be part of Sunil’s new show, which will also reportedly include Ali Asgar and Sugandha Mishra.
