How is psychology used in relationships?
The study funded by the National Institute of Mental Health raised some of these points in that most couples who had, say, only a few months together between the ages of 18 and 21 avoided intimacy and depended on their other half. They also showed a degree of fear of being rejected or abandoned. The test subjects all showed varying degrees of fear of being abandoned. Those who were safer on their own had lower levels, and others, who were less sure, showed elevated levels. ”
The results also captured the interesting differences in these levels between men and women. On the psychological side, it was noted that when dealing with relationship conflict, most men showed increased levels of anxiety, while only women who wanted to stay away from change showed increased levels of anxiety.
So we can see that women are more likely to end the reconciliation process quickly because they find it more rewarding physiologically. This is shown in the research that tended to show that levels of cortisol increased both before and during the fight, and women’s levels dropped significantly afterward, unlike most men.
Cortisol is usually referred to as the “stress hormone” because it is involved in stress and anxiety. The highest levels are usually in the early morning. So be kind to each other when you first wake up.
Men, on the other hand, showed a more continuous response to cortisol, so they were more passive towards reconciliation, as the prolonged levels made them less able to cope with the conflict, even if they wanted a resolution.
